What's Next?

The upcoming sermon set for my church got changed a little, so I spent the last few days coming up with these three new sketches.  The "Hosanna" one is already getting revised a bit in my brain.  I don't want those diagonal lines to be SO straight.  I'll have to free-hand them, instead of  using a straight edge.  That way they'll look more...natural?  I hope so!

I start painting on Monday!  These are pretty detailed so, despite my plan to make them predominantly black and white, I expect they'll take FOREVER.  Deep breath!!!  Here I go....!

Zacchaeus!

Everyone sing it with me:  "Zacchaeus was a wee little man, and a wee little man was he!  He climbed up in a sycamore tree for the Lord he wanted to see!"  Takes you back to Vacation Bible School days!  I don't actually have a reference  picture of a man climbing a gnarly tree wearing a skirt.  So I had to completely wing it!

This is sketch number 4....at least 4 more to go!  How would you paint the feeding of the 5,000?

...And Another...

It's a boat-load of fish!  This is the story where Jesus takes Peter (and his fishing partners, I assume) out in their boats to the middle of the lake and tells them to let down their nets.  Peter says, "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing...but I will do as You say and let down the nets."  Peter never struck me as a super submissive man, so his willingness to submit to Jesus here is remarkable.  They ended up getting so many fish their nets began to break, and when they got the fish into the boats, the boats began to sink.

Here's my thought, though: do I really want to have an 8' square canvas on the church wall with just a bunch of dead fish on it?  I'm not so sure about this one!

Sketches for Community Church

I don't start painting the next set for my church until September...well, maybe August.  That gives me the whole summer to work out the images and decide what I want to do.

One of my ideas was to paint a stack of black and white photographs...or perhaps sepia tone.  Something old fashioned.  I'd only put in bits and pieces of color, sort of to make a point.  

For the story of the temptation of Jesus, I was thinking along the lines of Him being alone and of how He quoted Scripture in response to Satan's attacks.  It's a beautiful thing to remember.  If my mind is filled with the word of God, then my foundation is solid.

I'll post more ideas and sketches as the weeks go by...

A Few Ink Sketches

These are the only ink sketches I produced out of two weeks worth of travel.  I'm actually quite pleased, because normally I would be tempted to just take pictures and not do any sketching at all!

The top one isn't anyone in particular.  I was just having fun with circles and curves.

Basically that's what all of these are:  me just having fun!
